Scott Wilson of “The Walking Dead” died Saturday Oct. 6 at the age of 76 due to complications with leukemia.
Wilson is an Atlanta, GA native known for playing chilling rolls, including one of the killers in the adaptation of the Truman Capote novel “In Cold Blood.” Other roles also included Abel Johnson from “The OA,” Sam Braun from “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and Harvey Oberst from “In the Heat of the Night.”
A tweet by the official Walking Dead comic book Twitter account released their condolences.
“We are deeply saddened to report that Scott Wilson, the incredible actor who played Hershel on #TheWalkingDead, has passed away at the age of 76,” the tweet said. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in paradise, Scott. We love you.”
While he is known for many things from his extensive acting career, his most known role is Hershel from “The Walking Dead,” often, the moral compass for lead character Rick Grimes. His character was killed off the show in season 4 by the governor.
At a panel at New York Comic Con 2018 it was announced that Wilson would be reprising his role as Hershel at some point in season 9. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed with its sources that Wilson had filmed his parts prior to his death.
Words of condolence and remembrance were tweeted and shared by many people involved with “The Walking Dead.”
Producer Gale Anne Hurd tweeted “Scott was one of the greats, both as an actor and a man,” she wrote. “We in #TheWalkingDeadFamily are truly grief stricken. He lived life to the fullest with his true love, his wife Heavenly. He is now a shining star in heaven spreading kindness and light forever. #RIP#ScottWilson“
A spokesperson for AMC released a statement that said “Scott will always be remembered as a great actor, and we all feel fortunate to have known him as an even better person. The character he embodied on “The Walking Dead,” Hershel, lived at the emotional core of the show. Like Scott in our lives, Hershel was a character whose actions continue to inform our characters’ choices to this day. Our hearts go out to his wife, family, friends and to the millions of fans who loved him. Scott will be missed.”
Khary Payton, known for playing King Ezekiel, shared a memory of the beloved actor.
He tweeted “The first time I met Scott Wilson, he gave me a big hug and said that this thing I had become apart of… was a family. He said I had a responsibility to take care of it. I have tried very hard to do that, sir. & I will continue. I promise. See you on the other side, my friend.”
The actor who plays Jesus, Tom Payne, tweeted, “Goodbye Scott Wilson you absolute legend.”
Carl, played by Chandler Riggs, said in a tweet that he will “never forget the things you told me and the time we spent together on set.”
Wilson was honored with a title card on the season 9 premiere of “The Walking Dead” that read “In Memory of Scott Wilson.”
