‘Final Cut’ prepares to shamble into theaters this summer

Kino Lorber has announced its acquisition of all US distribution rights to the highly anticipated film “Final Cut.” Directed by Academy Award winner Michel Hazanavicius, known for his work on “The Artist,” and featuring renowned actors Romain Duris and Bérénice Bejo, “Final Cut” is set to hit theaters nationwide in Summer 2023. Following the theatrical release, the film will also be available digitally and on home video across major platforms.

“Final Cut” is a remake of Shin’ichirô Ueda’s cult hit “One Cut of the Dead” (2017) and made its World Premiere as the Opening Night Selection at the prestigious 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The film has since garnered attention and acclaim at renowned international genre film festivals such as the Sitges Film Festival in Spain and Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.

The storyline of “Final Cut” revolves around a director, played by Romain Duris, who embarks on making a live, single-take, low-budget zombie movie. As the production progresses, the cast and crew begin transforming into actual zombies one by one. Hazanavicius expertly combines humor and meta elements to create a hilarious and entertaining film that also pays homage to the art of filmmaking. While the on-screen action unfolds in typical cheesy B-movie fashion, the off-screen antics portray the unpredictable and collaborative nature of film sets. “Final Cut” leans more towards blood-soaked farce than horror, offering viewers an affectionate embrace of goofy genre fun.

The distribution deal for “Final Cut” was successfully negotiated by Kino Lorber Senior Vice President Wendy Lidell and Eva Diederix of Wild Bunch International. The film is produced by Getaway Films and La Classe Américaine, in collaboration with SK Global Entertainment and BlueLight, and co-produced by France 2 Cinéma and Gaga Corporation.

Wendy Lidell, Kino Lorber Senior Vice President, expressed her excitement about the acquisition, stating, “Final Cut is the perfect film to bring people out to movie theaters: a hilarious, in-your-face, genre-twisting romp that demands the big screen treatment. Over-the-top gore even for the squeamish, and slapstick comedy even for the sophisticate, Final Cut has it all. I hope audiences will have as much fun watching this film as we will have releasing it.”

Director Michel Hazanavicius also shared his enthusiasm for the US release of “Final Cut” and his collaboration with Kino Lorber, saying, “I’m absolutely delighted that my movie Final Cut is being released in the US, and so proud to be working with Kino Lorber. I love American audiences – I’ve always found them very happy to laugh! So, enjoy the show, guys!”

With Kino Lorber’s acquisition of the US distribution rights, audiences across the country can eagerly anticipate the release of “Final Cut” in theaters next summer. The film promises to provide a thrilling and laughter-filled cinematic experience, combining the best elements of comedy, horror, and the art of filmmaking.
