If you’re searching for a thrilling and unconventional summer adventure, look no further than the “Zombie Train” offered by Watarase Keikoku Railway Co. This unique train ride, set to operate from June to September, will take passengers on a spine-chilling journey through the picturesque mountain gorge between Midori in Gunma Prefecture and the popular tourist destination of Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture.
The concept of the Zombie Train was conceived by the Nikko city government as a means to revive ridership on the scenic but financially struggling local line. With dwindling passenger numbers due to depopulation and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this creative and daring initiative aims to attract visitors seeking an adrenaline-fueled experience while also showcasing the historical significance of the region.
One of the main attractions that the Nikko city government hopes to capitalize on is the now-defunct Ashio Copper Mine. Once a major producer during the Edo Period, the mine witnessed Japan’s first major pollution disaster over a century ago. By combining the allure of the haunted past with the thrill of a zombie-infested train ride, the organizers are optimistic about generating renewed interest in the area.

The railway company, headquartered in Midori, recorded approximately 400,000 passengers in the fiscal year ending March 2018. However, since then, there has been a consistent decline of around 3 percent in passenger numbers each year. The pandemic dealt another blow, causing a drop to below 300,000 passengers for two consecutive fiscal years until March 2022. The Zombie Train endeavor is a proactive response to reverse this downward trend and inject new life into the local line.
The Zombie Train will traverse between Omama Station in Midori and Tsudo Station in Nikko. During the captivating 90-minute journey, passengers will have their nerves tested by “zombies” determined to scare them witless for a full hour. The experience promises to be an adrenaline-pumping adventure, with expertly crafted scares designed by Kowagarasetai, a Tokyo-based horror event production company known for its spine-chilling haunted houses in Gunma Prefecture’s Kiryu city. Volunteer students from senior high schools in Gunma Prefecture will also join forces with the organizers to bring this thrilling event to life. Collaboration between the city governments of Midori and Kiryu further adds to the immersive and engaging experience.
Operating exclusively in the first car of the Torokko Watarase Keikoku tram, the Zombie Train can accommodate up to 60 passengers per journey. To ensure your spot on this hair-raising adventure, reservations can be made by emailing tour@watetsu.com or calling 0277-73-2110.
